Things appear to be working, but my MTU in Slackware is dropping down to still. Just did a clean install on a Dell Latitude E of Slackware This content has been marked as final. When I edited the conf again and rebooted, the output during bootup looks like the same, but the address is held and I’m effectively online.
By trial and error I have found out that the connection works when set to 10mbit full duplex. Cannot say if at all related to your problem.

After that it worked perfectly. Enabling this may get a different lease than the kernel DHCP client.
